Offshore vs. Inland
Posted on the Offshore Diver Forum Jan 12th, 2001.
If you're a dive school student, this may be an interesting insight for you.

"I own an inland diving company located in Alabama. Have been in business for around 5 years or so. I spent the first part of my career inland working for a mom & pop diving company. I was taught a few things but most of it was OJT. I thought I knew it all after a few years. And my shit was golden. Then hurricane Andrew blew in and took out most of the Murphy/ODECO field in the Ship Shoal area. Yes I am a hurricane baby. Anyway over the next 10 years I found out what inland vs offshore was. I learned more in 1 year in the oilfield than I did in 5 inland. Here are just a few Offshore vs Inland things: Offshore= 6x6 jet pump, Inland= 3" trash pump, Offshore= 20,000 psi waterblaster, Inland= 2000psi carwasher, Offshore= He02, Inland= Nitrox, well i hope you get my point. I know there are many good inland divers but you can not get real heavy duty construction experience anywhere but offshore. There may be a few big jobs inland working with heavy loads and real equipment but not everyday. Offshore you work with this type of equipment daily and think nothing of it. I can just see trying to get 3' of cover on a P/L with a 3" trash pump. Hey dont laugh there are plenty of mom & pops out there that will give you just that. I wouldn't trade my experience offshore for anything, its what I use to blow my competition out of the water. Most of the divers that work for WDS are oilfield hands and seem to like working inland for a change. One last thing, I would like to say that this website seems to be the best out of all the others. Go figure, its been put together by an offshore diver."

Respectfully submitted,
Dennis Wilcox, Wilcox Diving & Salvage, Inc.
