Photo probably taken by Max Kimble in 1981 on the salvage of the Happy Runner in the River, over by the Gretna Ferry dock. Thats me, being held up by the diver....Reefer

Looking for a job in Singapore?
Drop by the Mitre hotel, a hub for divers on the Asian scene.

Photo & text from C. Preston

Some of our facilities include:
Rooms.
A Bar. (Well, sort of)
Rats.
Cockroaches.
Piles of rubble.
A great selection of vintage chairs
and stools lying around outside.

Our staff are not like in those jokey crab joints in the States. They really don't give a shit! A small tip for divers on a tight budget: If you team up with a local professional girl you can share the cost of the room - she works there during the day, and sleeps there with you at night. Diver heaven!

You'll find us at 145 Killiney road, not far from glittering Orchard road, Tel 7373811. Look out for our rusty, hand painted sign lying on the ground on the left hand side as you go uphill, and just follow the crude arrow.

We are very cheap and have the cheapest beer in Singapore, and for some reason all the diving companies call us to offer our honoured guests jobs on ships with similar facilities to ours.

We advise those divers prone to manic depression to invest in a room at a proper hotel, because waiting around here for a non-existent job may well push you completely over the edge. Your self esteem may take a nose dive, even if you don't.

Rumours of our recent demolition are greatly exaggerated.
See you soon!

48" Spool Going Over The Side
Jamnagar Gulf of Kutch India

Last spool for project completion. None of the divers ever saw their own hand in front of their faces. 6 knot + currents only allowed 2-3 hour lockouts. And we had to fit the spool in between the chains.

Freezing weather - no problem. Cold water - no problem.
Hot water machine broke - shut it down, we're going to the beach.

sizeable air gap off a lift boat
in the Ship Shoals block.

Installing a riser guard the hard way. Unfortunately, a hold back line got caught on the top of another riser guard on the same caisson where topside people couldn't reach it.
You know this sucked.
