The night shift

On February 16th, 1944, the oil supply ship El Grillo was sunk by German airplanes. They came unsuspected early in the morning and dropped three bombs which all hit the target, the Germans where experts in hitting the target. The ships crew tried shooting at the planes but they where way out of range. No one died in the attack.

The ship had about 8000 tons of oil on board. an estimated 1000 tons leaked out after the ship went down and was washed up on shore of the fjord. About 10 years later brass hat divers pumped up 5000 tons leaving 2000 tons for us which turned out to be only 94.

The whole project took 14 days working 24/7 in two shifts and the dept was 36 - 42 meters. Dives lasted 25 to 60 minutes followed by a surface decompression.

The dirtiest one, no wonder we only pumped up 94 tons

instead of 2000. It was all on the divers.

DSV on the left, oil tanker, that pumped up the oil, on the right.

After the dive he was very sorry he didn't put on the coveralls.
