How to log in:
Just type in your name and hit Enter. You can use whatever handle you like for any session. Once you are logged in you can loiter in the Lobby or create a room of your own. Your room can be password protected if you like. All rooms are temporary. If there is no one present for a few minutes, the room will time out and disappear. Feel free to experiment with the chat engine. You can initiate a private chat with anyone by double clicking on their name. You can also send sounds back and forth. Give it a whirl. Because the program runs locally and because the actual volume of data being transferred is very small, once loaded, it will run efficiently and will not hog all your vessel's bandwidth.

How it works:
Roger Roger is powered by a Java based engine licensed from ParaChat. Once downloaded, the code runs on your computer and allows you to freely roam the OD chat environment so long as your browser is running. Java is a scripting language which will run in most internet browsers. You may see a window warning you of "active content". This means that when the program is loaded, it will run and work on it's own. Generally this is not dangerous, and there are many, many websites that use active content, but anytime you run active content on your machine there are risks involved. So be advised - it's a decision you have to make. The Parachat engine is the best and most professionally executed of it's kind on the internet. Advice: learn how the security settings in your browser work. I'll tell you now, if you enable Java and then go cruising porn sites you will regret it. That's where the security settings come in.

A few ideas for use:
Screw Petrocom, for starters - create a private room, call your better half and give her the password. Voila; real-time communication with the beach for free. Another use could be a company wide dive sup meeting online. You can use it for anything. We are planning to host a few chat sessions with diving industry leaders. And of course there is always the opportunity to talk smack in real time with anybody anywhere in the world from the comfort of your horizontal Diver storage unit.

History:
offshorediver.com experimented with live chat in 2003. It was a dismal failure. The engine was weak and lacked many features present in the ParaChat product. Most dive boats did not have an internet connection. But now things have changed. We'll see how this goes. Comments and further ideas for use will be appreciated.
