Swing type check valve with counter weight. Counter weight assists either opening or closing, or is used when is valve is used in a vertical flow-down position.	Closeup of clapper lever on a swing check valve. Shows locking pin for locking valve in either open or closed position. Normal operating mode is unlocked. This lever will often be missing, however a crescent wrench will work fine.

Note: Most subsea ball valves have a worm gear & secondary stem which comes horizontally off the side of the valve near the top. This stem has a dust cap which must be removed before the valve stem can be turned. It is rare to encounter a hand wheel on bottom. You will occasionally see ball valves installed sideways; this is most often the case when the valve does have a hand wheel.
